The Garifuna Collective
Belize
The rich Garifuna culture of Central America has been shaped over centuries by its mixed ethnicity and location. The people were descended from Caribbean natives and enslaved Africans and the music is an intoxicating mix of both cultures’ rhythms. The Garifuna Collective is carrying the torch of this unique culture into the future, celebrating and sharing the stories of a community struggling to retain its language and traditions in the face of globalisation. They blend the percussion-heavy roots of Garifuna music with modern arrangements and instruments, creating an exuberant – and eminently danceable - tropical sound.
Workshop:
This workshop will demonstrate ‘Basica Garifuna’ culture drum patterns: Hüngühüngün, paranda, chumba, paranda and punta. Participants may bring any form of hand percussion and join in if they like. The members of the Collective will also give some insight into Garifuna history explaining the points of origin of the ethnic/cultural group to where they are now. The exile from the island of St Vincent will be highlighted and how the Garinagu have journeyed and struggled among the Central American countries namely; Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize (as well as the USA).
