Richard J Frankland
Australia
One of Australia’s most prominent Indigenous figures, Richard J Frankland is a multi-talented artist and activist, who works to promote cultural strengthening, cultural agency and hope for First Nations people. A Gunditjmara elder, from the south-west of Victoria, Frankland is a musician, filmmaker, activist, novelist, counsellor, community leader, educator, academic, songwriter and playwright. His rich life experience permeates his songs, stories and prose, which are set to the extraordinary guitar work of fellow Gunditjmara man Lee Sonnyboy Morgan, and the brilliant didgeridoo, sound effects and beats of Yorta Yorta descendent Scott Darlow. The songs and stories depict issues relevant to the First Nations experience, past and present, and dreams of a ‘Tomorrow Australia’.
Workshop:
Australia is at an incredible turning point where we have clear options about recognising who we were as a nation, who we are as a nation and, most importantly, who we can be. Art is voice and voice is freedom, and freedom is responsibility. This workshop is about the cultural loads of First Nation People and who we can be together. It is about humanising what has been dehumanised. It's a journey of healing through art, healing through culture and discovering who we can be together.
