Founded by composer and guitarist Dylan Marshall in 2017, Didier Kumalo is inspired by the jazz pioneers from Marshall’s city of origin, Cape Town in South Africa. The band creates hypnotic and danceable rhythms that pay tribute to classic African jazz ensembles, while taking the music into a vast array of new sonic territories. These include complex electronic and acoustic rhythms made for dancing, with loud fuzz guitar and synth solos. Marshall, who is also a founding member of Adelaide-based Afrobeat outfit, The Shaolin Afronauts, names his influences as Bembeya Jazz National, OK Jazz, Super Biton, Abdullah Ibrahim and Chris McGregor, 80s electro-funk, 70s jazz-rock and hip-hop.
