Embracing traditions from across the world, Constantinople is an ensemble that is always on a journey, not only musical, but geographical, historical, cultural and inner. Migration and the mixing of cultures is their territory and in following the tracks of their ancestors and adding a contemporary aesthetic, they create music that builds bridges between cultures, periods, styles and people. Over two decades, they have recorded 20 albums and travelled to 55 countries. Combining virtuoso setar from composer Kiya Tabassian with vocals, baroque violin, viola d’amore, viola da gamba, double bass and percussion, they create a new music where cultures converge. In the Footsteps of Rumi showcases not only the poetic beauty of the 13th Century mystic Djalaleddine Rumi, but the stunning vocal prowess of Belgian-Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali, who delivers these exceptional poems in Persian and Arabic.
Workshop:
This workshop will present some of the most emblematic and captivating instruments of the Middle-Eastern musical traditions, as the oud, setar, kemençe, kanun and riq. The audience will also get to learn some basic melodic and rhythmical patterns from Persian, Arabic and Turkish music. At the end of the workshop, they will accompany the group on a song from their most recent album, In the Footsteps of Rumi.
