Kefaya and Elaha Soroor
Afghanistan/UK/Italy
An award-winning collective of musicians and producers, Kefaya’s line-up reflects the group’s collaborative approach to music. With members from the UK, Italy, India, Iran and Greece, they draw on a myriad of sounds to present a united front of musical and political expression. Embracing the spirit of internationalism, the eclectic outfit seeks out common ground between global folk traditions and a cutting-edge sound rooted firmly in the 21st Century. Since winning Best Newcomer at the Songlines Music Awards 2017, Kefaya, and their exquisite Hazara vocalist Elaha Soroor, have gained a reputation across Europe and India for their compelling live shows.
Workshop:
In conversation with host, music journalist Jane Cornwell, the band will share some Afghan folk songs and talk about their partnership in creating the album Songs of our Mothers and their upcoming new album, as well as demonstrating the rhythmic elements of the music. Songs of our Mothers is a beautiful, contemporary reimagining of Afghan folk music. The folk songs, traditionally sung by Afghan women, tell of struggle and persecution under successive regimes. As a result, Elaha sings them for “those women around the world whose image has been erased and whose voice has been forbidden”.
