Julian Belbachir

Best known as the jubilant percussionist in the dub band OKA, Julian Belbachir has performed in more than 30 countries including shows at Glastonbury and Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Belbachir is an N’goni player (African harpist), drummer, percussionist, producer and composer who has dedicated his life to the folkloric music of North and West Africa. Born in Sydney, to Moroccan and Australian parents, he was raised in the multicultural Surry Hills and Redfern areas, which shaped his connection to the music and cultures he was surrounded by. His own sound fuses traditional music with Western contemporary and electronic vibes and his debut solo album Babdoukkala - and band - features WOMADelaide favourites Lamine Sonko and Moussa Diakite.
