Join these multi-talented musicians as they weave through Botanic Park and bring audiences together in a giant, spontaneous Macedonian dance circle! Linsey Pollak, Tunji Beier and Philip Griffin have played together over many years in various combinations, including Ross Daly’s Australian Labyrinth and The Balkanics. Now, as Gosti, the dynamic trio will be joined by Macedonian dancer extraordinaire Yorgo Kaporis, who will teach traditional dances to the live music. Pollak plays the gaida (Macedonian bagpipes), Beier the Macedonian tapan (Macedonian drum) and Griffin the tambura, a long-necked stringed instrument. Gosti will also present a large-scale dance workshop on stage, accompanied by members of Adelaide’s Macedonian community.
Workshop:
In this workshop Gosti (Linsey Pollak, Philip Griffin and Tunji Beier) will showcase Macedonian folk instruments – the Gaida, Tambura and Tapan (Macedonian bagpipe, long necked lute and double headed drum), exploring some of the traditional melodies and varied rhythms from that rich folk tradition. Special guest Yorgo Kaporis will demonstrate, teach and lead the audience in a number of Macedonian folk dances, joined by 15 members of the local Adelaide Macedonian folkloric ensemble, Sloboda.
