The founding members of the Romany supergroup Taraf de Haïdouks are back with a new band: Taraf de Caliu. From Clejani in Romania, they are the last generation of lăutari (folk musicians) performing authentic traditional music from the region. Under the lead of iconic violinist Georghe ‘Caliu’ Anghel, these legends of gypsy music have entertained thousands of people all over the world, with fans and collaborators including the late Yehudi Menuhin and Kronos Quartet. As Taraf de Haidouks, they were awarded the 2002 BBC World Music Prize for Best Group in Europe and the Middle East. As Taraf de Caliu in 2022, The Guardian described them as a “thrilling, virtuoso blend of rapid-fire duelling violins and cimbalom.”
