From a desert village in rural Niger, charismatic Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar is boldly reforging contemporary Saharan music. By melding Van Halen style pyrotechnics, full-blast noise and shredding, field recordings and electronic drums and adding poetic meditations on love, religion, women's rights, inequality and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers, Moctar has created his own burning style. The ferocity of his electric guitar and the band's hypnotic rhythm section bring the spirit of communities in Niger to the West and speak out against racism and inequality.
