This radical reimagining of Bizet’s voluptuous opera heroine was created by dancer and choreographer Maria Pagés, a pioneer in creating contemporary flamenco. Originally finding fame in Riverdance, Pagés formed her own company in 1990. Yo, Carmen is her visionary and flamboyant blending of Carmen and the songs that inspired it. With primal dance, poetry and the theatre of flamenco, it reclaims and remakes the story of Carmen as a vibrant ode to the essence of what it is to be a woman. Pagés dismantles the male-imagined stereotype of Carmen to bring us a real flesh-and-blood heroine.
