Performing "Le Dernier Appel" (The Last Cry)
This Australian / New Caledonian dance co-production captures a moment in the zeitgeist when indigenous communities are exploring recuperation in the aftermath of colonisation. As older ways of life deteriorate, change is increasingly urgent yet progress painfully slow. Le Dernier Appel / The Last Cry is a timely reminder of the issues raised by the referendum for independence in New Caledonia in November 2018, and explores how these concerns can disturb and regenerate dance in the Asia Pacific region.
From its bases in Broome and Sydney, Marrugeku is dedicated to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians working together to develop new dance languages that are restless, transformative and unwavering.
