With its hypnotic hip-hop vibe and punk-rock energy, BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) taps in to the spirit of its ancestors and the creative, rebellious energy of its hometown, Soweto. This outspoken and astounding seven-member band uses “incantations” in Zulu, Sotho and English, funky modulations and more to bring to the world the voice of their people. There are ritual songs, around-the-fire hood songs, shebeen songs, church songs, all used as weapons of political and spiritual liberation. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs. This band is about today and the future, infused with all that is the past.
