Known as the Grande Dame of Amazonian Song, Dona Onete released her debut album at the age of 73 (in 2014), although she’s been singing all her life. A vivacious storyteller, Onete joyously sings of love, sex and life in the Amazon, whether it’s spicy seasoning or salty kisses. A cult figure in her native Brazil, her sound is a unique twist on Carimbo, which is a blend of rhythms from native Brazilians, African slaves and the Carribean. “Traditional Carimbo songs are about nature and tradition - I modernised it by singing about love and sex, and taking influence from Samba and Pagoda,” says Onete.
