Orang Orang Drum Theatre
Malaysia
LaguKu and The Memories
Transforming a traditional art form into something new, vibrant and colourful, Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s twelve performers use precision percussion, theatre and dance to share the rich folklore of Malaysian society. LaguKu reveals the hidden power of the drum through a myriad of diverse, percussive instruments from different cultures, combined with vocals and highly physical choreography, and The Memories explores the idea of collective memory and the concept of ‘home’ as a migrant.
WORKSHOP:
At this workshop, you’ll learn how to play the traditional 24 Festive Drums and get into the rhythm of this Malaysian intangible cultural heritage. The concept of the 24 Festive Drums was created in 1988 by two talented Malaysians; cultural activist Mr Tan Chai Puan and renowned musician, the late Mr Tan Hooi Song. They shared the same vision and, with missionary zeal, worked together to create the 24 Festive Drums. The concept represents the cycle of 24 festivals in the lunar calendar that, for thousands of years, has guided the agricultural activities of the Chinese.
