WOMADelaide became one of Australia's first major 'green festivals' and the festival has since become a leader in developing environmental initiatives and sustainability practices within the event industry. Flag artist Angus Watt returned to work with Anangu Pitjantjatjara Inma artists to create a new collection of flags. To celebrate the United Nations International Year of Volunteers, 18 volunteers operated the first 'Info Booth', now a permament central point of the WOMADelaide site. The festival now engages between 300-500 volunteers yearly across special projects, visual arts, green team and crowd care etc. ‘Stage 5’ was moved, again!

Highlights - Cuban stars Sierra Maestra, a very fresh John Butler Trio, featuring guests Carlo Santone and Natalie Pa'apa'a (two ‘Byron Bay buskers’ who would later form Blue King Brown), Rokia Traore, and a special visit from the Gyuto Monks of Tibet. Headliner Femi Kuti was a late cancellation, being replaced by Papa Wemba.
