WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
   Sierra Maestra (Cuba)
Exclusive Australian performance at Womadelaide 2001.  Sierra Maestra, is the outstanding son band from Havana.  They’ve been stars of Cuban music since the late 1970s and have played a significant part in the recent global explosion in popularity of Cuban music.  Ex-leader Juan De Marco Gonzalez created the Afro-Cuban All Stars while with the band, and Jesus Alemany, trumpet player with Sierra Maestra for 25 years created a new group Cubanisimo!  Yet Sierra remains as strong as ever.   They were the first group, and remain the best, to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, trumpet, bongo, guiro and vocals as in the 1920s & 30s, but with a modern stamp for the new generation of Cubans.  Sierra Maestra first performed in 1976 and have since recorded 8 LPs and 10 singles, with appearances on over 7 compilations.  They maintain a full international recording and touring career around Europe, Africa and Asia.  A French feature film ‘SALSA!’ in which Sierra Maestra star and play was released in 2000. Sierra Maestra first toured to Australia for Womadelaide in 1995.
