There hasn’t been so
much excitement on the Malian music scene since Oumou Sangare released
her debut album in 1988. Like Sangare, Traore has beauty, youth,
intelligence and abundant talent on her side but, unlike Sangare, she has
had little to do with the elite ‘griottes’ (female praise singers) who
earn huge fees at high-profile religious events. She has broken with
many age-old traditions; her fresh approach on her debut album “Mouneissa”
showcased unheard of combinations of Malian instruments and sounds, and
her voice is sweet and gentle, in total contrast to the shrill sounds of
the ‘griottes’. Rokia Traore is an artist who has created her own
style in a country among the musically richest in all Africa. Her
second CD “Wanita” is out now.
