WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
  Nabarlek Band (Australia)
From the tiny central Arnhemland (Manmoyi) community comes the Narbalek Band, who in the tradition of other contemporary Aboriginal bands such as Youthu Yindi and Warumpi, present Aboriginal culture through music that will find a place in the mainstream.  Their songs are derived from traditional Aboriginal stories and songs rewritten with a Western rock music format.  Together since 1985, when the band consisted of two busted acoustic guitars and a set of upturned flour tins as drums, Nabarlek are now set to become the next ‘big thing’ from Arnhemland.  They performed at this year’s Adelaide Festival, have toured extensively throughout regional SA and NT, and a performance in Hanover, Germany this year was their first overseas engagement.  Their debut CD titled ‘Munwurrk’, meaning bushfire, was released earlier this year.
