WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
  Chava Alberstein (Israel)
A diva who is seen as a National Treasure and the ‘first lady of folk’ in Israel, Alberstein has been performing, mostly in Hebrew and Yiddish, for over 30 years. By the time she was 17 and about to join the army, she had her first recording contract and hit record – since then she has recorded over 50 albums in a range of styles; folk, pop, rock, jazz, cabaret, world beat and klezmer and toured internationally.  Her lush and strong Piaf-like voice sings of longing, loss and a search for identity and, occasionally, of heated political issues.  She is one of those passionate and rare performers who can get up in front of a concert hall and, by sheer force of personality, grab an audience that not only doesn’t know her material, but doesn’t even speak the language!

Chava Alberstein’s tour to Womadelaide 2001 is supported by the
Embassy of Israel and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs
