WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
  Eugenio Bennato and Musicanova (Italy)
Bennato's project 'Taranta Power' started in 1998 and has rejuvenated the traditional Mediterranean art of taranta (more commonly known as 'tarantella').  This magic and energetic form of rhythm and dance has a place alongside Portugal's fado or Spain's flamenco.  Bennato found fame initially through his research into ethnic music in the late 60s.  In 1976 Bennato gathered an extraordinary group of musicians and dancers from across Italy to form the Musicanova ensemble and since then he has recorded dozens of albums and toured extensively throughout Europe, the USA, the UK, the former Soviet Union and South America.  Considered to be the father of Southern Italian music, he has recorded music for film, theatre and classical ballet and his brilliant guitar style, combined with the impact of taranta, has unearthed an enthusiastic young audience of hip-hop and rock fans!
