WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
  Barbara Luna (Argentina)
Barbara Luna is a gifted guitarist, songwriter and dynamic performer from Buenos Aires.   Her voice is distinctive and warm, with an incredibly wide range, and  her music is Latin/South American in global terms but it traverses typical Argentine syncopations and Creole grooves, with hints of Spanish and West African Rhumbas.  The music is melodic, catchy and timeless and her compositions rich, varied, bold and seductive.  From a young age she had the Milonga (a fluid and uptempo tango) all around her, and at age four was proudly singing the folk songs of her region.  A career as a professional musician led Barbara to France where she became a hit with Latin and Tango afficionados.   Here she worked with Colombian salsa artist Yori Buenaventura, and the Argentine singer/composer/painter, Juan Carlos Caceres, following which in 1998 she recorded her first album ‘A la vida, a la muerte’ . A second CD is due for release.  Luna’s entrancing live performances showcase the diversity and the beauty of her country, with elements of tango, Afro-Cuban son-bolero, Chacarera (Latin Indian), Huayno (Guacho cowboys) and other folk influences from the diverse provinces.  She performs with an all-star, all-Argentine line-up.
