WOMADELAIDE 2001 program highlights
  Afro Celt Sound System  (UK/Ireland/Africa)
Australia was introduced to the eclectic sounds of the Afro Celt Sound System at Womadelaide 97.  Making a welcome return in 2001,  Afro Celt Sound System are probably the world’s best-known innovators of what could be termed ‘tribal electronica’; where world music meets high technology.  Their joyful and eclectic music layers African instruments with Irish instruments, reels and traditional melodies, loops and a driving, dance-floor bass.  Their second CD,  “Release Vol 2”, has been played by DJs across the world (receiving high praise on BBC Radio 1 from the ‘father of dance music’, Pete Tong) since it came out this year; their first CD was also highly successful and their third will be released in early 2001.  After CD sales of 250,000+ and hundreds of performances at WOMADs and other major festivals and venues around the world, the group’s music appears to be equally well-received by an ‘MTV rock crowd’, a ‘folk crowd’ or a ‘night-clubbing crowd’.
Afro-Celt Sound System are:  Simon Emmerson, Iarla O’Lionnaird, Demba Barry, Moussa Sissokho, James McNally, N’Faly Kouyate. Martin Russell, Arivinderpal (Johnny) Kalsi, Emer Mayock
