What is RECOGNISE?

RECOGNISE is the movement to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution and ensure that there is no place in it for racial discrimination. RECOGNISE aims to raise awareness of the exclusion of ATSI peoples from the Constitution, and is working toward enhancing the fairness and respect at the heart of it. Their goal is a more united nation, offering a chance for Australia to acknowledge the first chapter of its national story.

RECOGNISE is a part of Reconciliation Australia, and is governed by the Board of Reconciliation Australia.

Why RECOGNISE?

Constitutional recognition is about telling the nation’s whole story and dealing with the racial discrimination in Australia’s Constitution, which was written more than a century ago. By then, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had lived here for more than 40,000 years, maintaining the oldest living culture on the planet.

Every Australian can rightly be proud that Australia is home to the longest unbroken thread of human culture on the planet. We can be a part of an important moment in Australia’s history and vote to take racism out of our Constitution and put Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recognition in, leaving a legacy for future generations.

WOMADelaide is a proud supporter of the RECOGNISE movement as an important step toward building a unified, prosperous and modern future for Australia.
