Arrested Development lead the first major line up announcement for 2014

WOMADelaide announced another 11 groups and two prominent speakers today for its 2014 event in Adelaide’s Botanic Park, to be held 7 - 10 March.

The two-time Grammy Award-winning US hip hop act, Arrested Development join the previously announced English singer songwriter & activist Billy Bragg, Japanese funk band Osaka Monaurail, Austria’s Living Room and Papua New Guinean-born singer-songwriter Ngaiire.

Arrested Development were pioneers of positive and socially-conscious hip hop music when they emerged in 1992 and for two decades and ten albums since, they’ve stood the test of time.

WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said that the festival was delighted to bring the iconic group to WOMADelaide for their exclusive Australian performance.

“They still put on one of the most entertaining and energetic live shows around and we are sure their WOMADelaide performance will be a highlight” said Mr Scobie.

“We’re also pleased to confirm that Peter Garrett, former Midnight Oil frontman and Labor Minister, will be among the prominent speakers taking part in The Planet Talks program, along with British barrister, author and activist Polly Higgins who is campaigning to make ‘ecocide’ the 5th Crime Against Peace under the UN charter.”

“The 2014 program will again be a wonderfully diverse journey of excitement and discovery, with a host of established international stars performing alongside breathtaking new artists performing in Australia for the first time,” he said.
Joining Arrested Development and the two Planet Talks speakers at WOMADelaide 2014 will be –

  • Scottish Folk Band of the Year at the 2012 Trads, Breabach
  • Spanish flamenco jazz fusion star Buika
  • Reunion Island blues hero, Danyel Waro
  • Voice of the Tunisian revolution, Emel Mathlouthi
  • Indigenous Australian singer-songwriter, Kutcha Edwards
  • Hawaiian slack key guitarist and activist, Makana
  • Zimbabwe’s dynamic young band, Mokoomba
  • Brooklyn’s Bhangra and brass party band, Red Baraat
  • British traveller (gypsy) music revivalist Sam Lee & Friends
  • China’s folk phenomenon, Shanren.

WOMADelaide’s full program of over 60 local, national and international superstar acts and talented new discoveries from over 30 countries will be released on 14 November 2014.
