what is womadelaide

A slice of heaven on earth - a brief alternative vision of the kind of world in which we would like to live; a world of tolerance and cultural curiosity - where tradition is acknowledged and innovation welcomed, age respected and youth celebrated, where learning is pleasure, where our rich indigenous heritage is regarded as central to our culture and where care for the environment is a shared responsibility.

Botanic Park, a green haven in the heart of Adelaide, provides shady groves for intimate performances and lots of lawns for lazing or dancing on. There's genuinely something for everyone on the six stages - and throughout the Park - with hands-on fun for young kids, visual arts and street theatre, great wine, international food and crafts, plenty of sunshine and of course the company of your friends and family!

green and global

WOMADelaide acknowledges the need to measure its environmental performance and aims to remove its ecological footprint. Australia's largest environmental organisation, Greening Australia, has joined forces with WOMADelaide to remove the global warming impact of the 2007 event.

For the first time, WOMADelaide will be a Carbon Neutral event through tree plantings by Greening Australia.

The amount of carbon generated by WOMADelaide, through travel, lighting, power etc will be offset through the revegetation of native bushland in South Australia. Greening Australia's carbon offset partner ACBI Ltd will provide legal contracts to protect permanently the WOMADelaide trees. A vital element of making this green dream a reality is the planting of trees to offset carbon dioxide emissions.

We are all responsible for contributing to the global warming problem, and you too can play a role in the solution ... offset some or all of the carbon dioxide produced by you or your organisation with plantings managed by Greening Australia.

zero waste

In 2007 Zero Waste SA will again support the festival in its efforts to ensure that it recycles and composts the maximum amount of waste possible.

In 2006, 15.23 tonnes of waste was diverted from landfill, 9.5 tonnes of which became compost. This means that the festival managed to divert 65% of all waste produced, not bad for three days and 75,000 attendances.

In case you don't know this, since 2001, all of the festival's food stalls and bars have used biodegradable crockery and cutlery - even the beer cups breakdown over time. As ever, we ask you to use carefully the clearly marked bins on site, and consider what you bring with you from home as the split bins can cope only with biodegradables (food scraps) or recyclables (drink containers - plastic bottles, cans) so if you're planning to bring a picnic alongÊand wrap your food in tin foil, you'll have to take it home with you!
