Tananas (South Africa) |
Highly accomplished session
musicians, Steve Newman (acoustic guitar), Gito Baloi (Bass guitar and
vocals) and Ian Herman (drums and percussion) are Tananas, a thoroughly
modern band whose existence would be impossible without the wonders of
modern travel and communications. Steve and Gito live in the Eastern
Cape and Jo’burg and Ian in San Francisco. Once a year they get together
to share musical experiences, jam and record, all in less than a month.
This nomadic arrangement has produced an extraordinary series of albums,
the last of which ‘Seed’ was released in 2000. The Tananas style
is rooted in the South African Afro Pop on which the trio cut their musical
teeth in the 60s and 70s. Acoustic folk elements and flamenco/jazz
influences have joined the fray to produce a light airy volatile sound
which is hugely enjoyable. They are regulars on the Womad international
festivals circuit and visit Australia for the first time in 2001. |
