Sierra Maestra (Cuba) |
Exclusive Australian
performance at Womadelaide 2001. Sierra Maestra, is the outstanding
son band from Havana. They’ve been stars of Cuban music since the
late 1970s and have played a significant part in the recent global explosion
in popularity of Cuban music. Ex-leader Juan De Marco Gonzalez created
the Afro-Cuban All Stars while with the band, and Jesus Alemany, trumpet
player with Sierra Maestra for 25 years created a new group Cubanisimo!
Yet Sierra remains as strong as ever. They were the first group,
and remain the best, to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar,
trumpet, bongo, guiro and vocals as in the 1920s & 30s, but with a
modern stamp for the new generation of Cubans. Sierra Maestra first
performed in 1976 and have since recorded 8 LPs and 10 singles, with appearances
on over 7 compilations. They maintain a full international recording
and touring career around Europe, Africa and Asia. A French feature
film ‘SALSA!’ in which Sierra Maestra star and play was released in 2000.
Sierra Maestra first toured to Australia for Womadelaide in 1995. |
